A Reader's Ramble- Everneath

For this very special Reader's Ramble, I will be reviewing the very first ARC I have ever received, Everneath by Brodi Ashton.

Everneath will be published by Harper Collins/ Blazer + Bray on January 24th, 2012.  Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC!

Page count- 384

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.
She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.
Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.
As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...
Plot- Going into this book, I had NO IDEA it was a Greek Mythology one! I'm really interested in Greek Mythology, so I was pretty excited about this. In the beginning, I was pretty creeped out by what was going on.  It was all just really weird and confusing, then started to make a lot more sense once the book went on.
There were a lot of.. weird.. things happen. It all just was kind of out there. I must admit though, the whole idea of the Everlivings are really unique and different, but it was all so bizarre.
I found myself getting really bored throughout some parts of the book and becoming reluctant to read it. I'd skip over paragraphs of prose just to find some kind of dialogue.

The romance in this novel was adorable. I thought it was really entertaining and it kept me reading. I was practically cheering for them to get back together throughout the book.
Though it was cute, it was typical. The popular football player, golden boy, falls for a simple, nobody girl. That never happens in real life, ever. Or at least it never does at my school anyway.

So whenever I see that kind of romance nowadays, it just annoys me.
That's a personal thing. But, the romance in the book was adorable.
The end had tons of suspense. The rest of it, not too much happened. I really liked when the author showed us flashbacks from the past. That was one of my favorite things in this book.

By reading this, you can tell this is the author's debut book. Just the style of it was young.

THAT ENDING. Oh my gosh. I knew something of that nature would happen but.. I didn't expect it to be done by THAT PERSON. WHY? WHY? It kinda annoyed me and shocked me at the same time.
So overall for the plot, didn't love it, but certainly didn't hate it. It had its positives but definitely a bunch of negatives as well.

Setting- The town she lives in is irrelevant, really. It's the Everneath that matters. That place just seems to neat, and creepy, but also cool. Like I want to visit it. Her descriptions of it were really good, I had a clear image of it in my head. Even though this book is based on Greek Myths, it has it's own uniqueness to it.

Characters- Hmm, I'm trying to think of the right words to get my point across that won't totally bash this book..
Nikki. I didn't really like her. I never truly felt like I knew her, she was just the narrator, and not much else. Like, I didn't really care what happened to her because I didn't care about her.
I kept saying to myself, "Oh my gosh, just go down to the freaking Everneath with Cole and this can be over already."

Cole on the other hand, I liked. He was really good for a bad guy. I enjoyed his cockiness and how he annoyed Nikki (because I didn't like Nikki)
Jack, I liked Jack too. He was really cute and I wish he was mine. But, like I said above, the type of relationship he had with Nikki hardly ever happens, so that kind of makes him unrealistic to me also. But.. he was so caring and nice.. gah. It's hard to dislike him.

The characters were pretty good. I just didn't like Nikki.

Cover-  AHHHHH! I love that cover! It's so beautiful! The dress is gorgeous, and the smoke around it makes it look so epic! The title font is great too! This definitely sticks out to me on a shelf!

Overall- Overall, I'm just confused.
As I'm reading this book, my mind was whirling. The author leaves a lot of questions unanswered, which is good in a way... hmm.
It wasn't a bad read at all, but it definitely was not one of my favorites.
It just.. was kind of an immature read. The characters could have been developed a little better, the plot could have been more exciting and made more sense.

The ending made me want to throw my kindle across the room. WHYYY?! :'(
Teenage love these days is just starting to seem so unrealistic to me, in any book I read. But, that's mainly a personal thing.

So, with that being said, Everneath gets 4/5 stars. I'd give it 3.5 if I could. But Goodreads doesn't have that option...

Ooh, LOVE Greek Mythology!! And I agree, that cover with the smoke and everything? EPIC. Plus, I love that you got a copy before it came out... ;)

This book sounds pretty neat! The confusing, creepy aspect really interests me. :)

I love adorable romances!! I know what you mean by an unrealistic romance - I've encountered some in books before that make me go hmmm... But still, those kinds of romances make you warm and fuzzy inside, at least in my experience. :)

Sounds like a neat book, thanks for the review!!
